                                                  Blog 4:  Compare and Contrast

I have chosen to do my compare and contrast essay on black and white photography versus color photography.  Though it may sound simplistic, there are varying thoughts on both forms.  My purpose in writing this essay is to enlighten myself and those who read it, that black and white photography continues to have a strong presence in our art world, even though the standard today is color.

I chose this topic because my favorite hobby is photography.  And I am intrigued with the idea of shooting more black and white images.  This compare and contrast essay will likely set my interest in motion.

I Want a Wife, by Judy Brady was written with the purpose of divulging, in abundance, what the roles of a wife and mother are, compared to the husbands contribution - or lack of.  She stresses the theme that a wife and mother's duties are unending and taken for granted.  Brady uses "I want a wife" multiple times, in almost every paragraph, pounding home the presumptiveness of a house wife's job description.

Men - It's Their Nature  by Christina Sommers  makes the point, based on scientific studies and research, that society cannot change male / boy characteristics.  And that the attempt to use "gender reformers" to "free boys from male stereotypes" is against nature. The author presents a personal experience with her own son, that backs her opinion.  Sommer agrees that society should continue to use the "proven"... "traditional approach" through "character education" that creates well rounded, "conscientious" young adult males. (Sommers, page 367, paragraph 13)

I've decided to write my analysis essay on I Want a Wife because it really struck a chord with me.  I've observed my own mother during this generation, circa 1970's, and I have my own experiences as a stay at home wife and mom. I'm now, also, observing and conversing with my daughters and their relationship dynamics.  I'm curious about Brady's choice to use sarcasm and anger to get her point across.  It's very interesting!

                                             The Place I Love...

This place I love to visit has deep seated roots in my life.  Especially during my formidable years.  Our large family took refuge here and it became our "escape" from city life.

High in altitude and serenity, this place managed to set aside my worries and fears and let me soak in nature, in it's purest form.  There was never a shortage of wildlife, and beauty.  Towering firs and pine trees clung to their colors year round, yet the seasons changed the landscapes dramatically.  Fall was a patchwork of vibrant colors portraying hues of red, orange, and yellow that couldn't help but create a masterful canvas.

Winter months were scenes right out of a modern Currier & Ives,  and they were colder than cold!  It was not unusual to see drifts of snow 6 - 10 feet high while temperatures fell below zero consistently. Christmas time was filled with tobogganing, snowmobiles, and bonfires.  Winter break never lasted quite long enough...

Spring equated to hillside wildflower beds with sheets of yellow and purple blossoms.  The intensity of chores climbed at this time of year, but I looked forward to reaping the rewards of my work at harvest time.

The snow melt created a temporary creek through the middle of summer.  And it became our respite for relief during the blazing afternoon sun.  It was hard to escape the summer heat, with temperatures averaging in the 90's and more often than not, reaching somewhere in the 100's, unabashedly.  When the snow melt ceased to feed the creek, we were grateful for the bubbling spring that took over.  And if that didn't provide enough relief, if we were lucky, we fled to town, to open swim in the river.

What I loved most about this place, and it was usually in the Summer, was the smell.  The sun created a fragrance that I don't believe can be bottled.  It was a combination of pine needles and sap mixed with the heat of sun rays, and clean air.  I haven't returned to this place in a few years, but sometimes when I'm out walking I'll pass an area where the sun is beating down and that familiar scent rises up and touches my senses.  I immediately feel an overwhelming calm and I let it bring me back to that place I love.

Destroyed

1.  The article by Peter F. Martin, titled Destroyed, is about the wide use of steroids in the current sports world today. Martin discusses the fans and media's perspective.  He also mentions his own experience with sports as a kid.  Martin also suggests how the victim(s) may be the athletes themselves.

2.  Drugs that enhance athletes during competition threaten the authenticity of sports.  Our knowledge of past sports greats and history, that were defined by natural talent and strength is becoming less pure.  Unfortunately the athletes may be suffering more than the fans.  The cost of these illicit drugs are taking a toll on the bodies of these competitors.  The viewers of these sports stars see dishonesty, although we may want to consider the athletes risks to themselves.

3.  Paragraph 6 struck me; where Martin asks "But why is it against the rules in the first place?"  Martin is questioning what cheating is.  At this point I was reminded of my own college days of competition in Women's Track and Field.  There was a small group of athletes that may have been receiving more than just "vitamin B" injections. I knew in my heart, that I would never go that route.  Winning was important to me, but not at that price.  I had to accept that I may never win against these athletes. I focused on doing my best and took pride in out running or out throwing my fellow competitors who I knew were also taking the "natural" approach.  In fact, I still feel today, that there should be a Natural, drug free, Olympics and a "Cheaters" Games.  Is that realistic?  I'm not sure.  I haven't stayed up on the drug testing scene.  I do admit that I have lost a great deal of respect for those who get caught and wonder how they feel about themselves.
